Land, Art & Spirit in the California Deserts - A Personal Journey

On Friday, November 10th I will be facilitating an online circle on the intersection of land, art & spirit through a personal share. This plática was created at the request of community members that were curious about my work on the land and how I make space for my spiritual and artistic practices while navigating capitalism, specifically as a rural queer in California. This circle will include storytelling, visual aids & time for questions from attendees.

Everyone is welcome to attend! Registration is offered at a sliding scale rate, and there are a limited amount of scholarships for those that identify as Black, Indigenous & People of Color. Due to confidentiality, this online gathering will not be recorded.

Registration can be found through the following link: https://forms.gle/dfhpNaGjZ4Ur4jFNA

Frontier Fellowship - Blanca S. Villalobos

What about Green River & the Frontier Fellowship excites you most?

What I am looking forward to the most at Green River and as a Frontier Fellow is the opportunity to take part in any community building efforts to uplift voices from the global majority while in the middle of a global pandemic. I love meeting new people, learning about their passions and being able to witness their resiliency. My hope is to center joy and knowledge sharing while in communion in such a beautiful landscape. As for my art, I am excited to shift my practice so that I may create from a place of joy rather than from trauma. This is not to negate or dismiss my own journey in healing, on the contrary I look forward to cultivating moments of bliss.

Reclaiming Dreams for Survivors: Free Workshop

Our dreams are sacred & depending on our experience this world may be a source of anxiety or one of healing. This is due to many reasons, some of which are tied to trauma and oppression to name a few. Reclaiming your dream world is an act of spiritual resistance and connecting with plants is an amazing way to begin your relationship to your dreams.

Folks who experience PTSD from sexual assault are more likely to have a challenging time with sleep and all matters of dreaming. Healing happens at its own pace, is non-linear, varies from survivor to survivor and requires the understanding that not all dream practices or plant allies will resonate with folks.

Video Trauma

Extradition Series Fall Concert 2017

Extradition Series Fall Concert 2017

The Creative Music Guild’s Extradition Series will present its fall 2017 concert on Saturday, October 21, dedicated to composer Pauline Oliveros (1932–2016) as we approach the one-year anniversary of her passing. The concert will feature seven intimate works of 20th- and 21st-century experimental music, performed by a cast of outstanding regional musicians:

~ Daniel Brandes, “A Dwelling Place for You” (2014): A simple, intimate work scored for two singers, who are asked to immerse themselves in the experience of singing to and with each other, accompanying themselves with the sound of natural objects – dry leaves, water, pebbles, etc. The piece will be performed by Blanca Stacey Villalobos and Lara Pacheco (voices, objects).

~ Pauline Oliveros, “Two for T” (date unknown): Another intimate duet, in which each player is asked to combine directions provided by the composer into a new, individual score. In performance, the challenge involves reconciling the sometimes competing imperatives of these individual scores to create a harmonious whole. The piece will be performed by Catherine Lee (oboe d’amore) and Matt Hannafin (percussion).

~ Christopher Hobbs, “Two Compositions, 21 May 1969 (No. 2)”: One of the many “performance rites” devised by Cornelius Cardew’s Scratch Orchestra, this text-based composition gives almost no indication of how the music should or will sound. Instead, it provides a simple structure of visual cues that signal performers to play “for a short time." In the resulting spaciousness, the music appears as blooms in a desert – short, bright moments that are all the more remarkable for their rarity and contrast with the stillness all around. The piece will be performed by Sage Fisher (harp), Mike Gamble (nylon-string guitar), Gina James (voice), Dana Reason (piano), Andre St. James (double bass), Alyssa Reed-Stuewe (voice), Bonnie Singer (voice), and Marion Van Namen (voice).

~ Gordon Mumma, “7/5 a Pauline Oliveros” (1978) and Tom Johnson, “Chain II / Chain III” (1967): Gordon Mumma’s piece is a small gem, taking less than two minutes to perform. Tom Johnson’s pieces are flow charts for creating spontaneous music. For this performance, pianist Dana Reason will play the pieces sequentially, using the notes and chords of the Mumma composition as raw material for navigating Johnson’s structures – essentially creating a deconstruction and reorientation of Mumma's etude.

~ Dana Reason, “Folded Subjects: Olive Rose” (2017): Composed for the recent “Still Listening” tribute exhibit honoring Pauline Oliveros, “Folded Subject: Olive Rose” asks performers to reinterpret a piece of written music by folding the pages in various ways and actualizing a number of simple directions, revealing alternate paths into the music. The piece will be performed by Lee Elderton (soprano sax), Mike Gamble (guitar), Catherine Lee (oboe), Andre St. James (double bass), and Evan Spacht (trombone).

~ Antoine Beuger, “Cantor Quartets” (2003): A 15-page score, with each page containing four lines of seven notes each, “Cantor Quartets” is performed as a round, with four performers entering sequentially as the performer before them finishes a line – meaning each page begins as a solo, them becomes a duo, trio, and finally quartet. The ensemble is free to play as many pages as they choose, in any order. The piece will be performed by Lee Elderton (clarinet), Mike Gamble (eBow guitar), Andre St. James (bass), and Evan Spacht (trombone).

The Extradition Series is a quarterly concert series presenting composed and improvised New Music and works from the 20th-century experimental tradition. The series is directed by Matt Hannafin and presented by the Creative Music Guild.

Who Is She: A Program Of Emerging Women Filmmakers

Did you see Wonder Woman? Did you love it? Hell yeah! But perhaps a more effective way to celebrate lady-made-films is to act locally, by supporting, listening, and viewing the work of our female-identifying makers here in Portland. Bad-ass women filmmakers are by no means a new phenomena here, and this tradition is being carried on today by a bevvy of emerging lady-visionaries. Who is She is a program of new work from women who are making shit happen. This program is not some exclusive girls-rule-boys-drool club, but a celebration and acknowledgement of the resilient women we owe our scene to; past, present and future. Come worship these queens. Subjects include nature, place, friendship, and self. Works of experimental, low-fi, documentary and comedy.

Establishing & Sustaining Healthy Boundaries as Artists

Join home school at S1 for a workshop on healthy boundaries con las Pochas Radicales! As always this event will be free and open to the public, livestreamed online for remote viewers. Snacks and refreshments will be available. Please note the maximum capacity for this workshop is 40 participants.

---------

"For our last happening of the year, we are holding space for folks that are interested in creating, establishing and sustaining healthy relationships as artists with a focus on boundaries. As creatives, we are simultaneously navigating relations with collaborators, galleries, institutions, communities & social media among others. Sometimes these relationships can be difficult when we consider the identities and experiences we hold, especially if we come from a marginalized community.

How do I know when I am tapped out? Do I feel comfortable saying no? Do my relationships overlap? Does this relationship need to change or be let go? The workshop is open to all genders & identities but will focus on the experiences of BIPOC artists as intersectionality greatly informs how bodies & labor are perceived. Our intention is for folks to leave feeling self aware about their needs & capacity, confident and empowered to move forward in their relationships in a way that honors their relationship to Self.

Outside of the collective Blanca teaches an anti-oppression healthy relationships curriculum to Latinx youth with the goal of preventing gender-based violence. She uses a popular education model and seeks to create an environment that is both trauma informed and reflective of the community she is engaging with.

First hour: Discussion & Knowledge Share
Second hour: Written & Visual Art Activity

*This will also be Blanca’s last engagement with Pochas Radicales for quite some time as she is honoring herself by listening to her heart. She will be moving back to her first home at the beginning of 2018."

Performance: Residency In The Garden

Through exploration with vinyl, digital sounds and field recordings, huixola will be performing an evening of music & storytelling inspired by dreams had during her week long stay at the residency. All are welcome to attend, lay in the grass under a beautiful summer night and commune over individual and collective dreams for healing & empowerment. Folks are invited to bring something to share, whether that be food, beverages, flowers or an unscented white candle as an offering to the performance.

An avid dreamer & storyteller, huixola uses these mediums as a way to honor her ancestors and as an ongoing practice to heal current, past and ancestral traumas as a queer brown woman with indigenous roots in Jalisco, MX.

*During her stay at the residency, huixola will be holding space for dream circles as a way to build community through practice, interpretation & guidance. All dreamers, regardless of experience, are welcome. More information regarding the scheduling of these circles will be released as soon as possible, thanks!

~~~~~~~
A través de la exploración con vinilos, sonidos digitales y grabaciones del campo, huixola presentará una noche de música y narración inspirada por sueños durante su residencia de una semana en el jardín. Todxs son bienvenidos a asistir, acostarse sobre el pasto debajo una bella noche de verano y platicar sobre sueños individuos y colectivos para la sanación y fortalecimiento.  La gente está invitada a traer algo para compartir, sea comida, bebidas, flores o una vela blanca sin olor para el performance.
Una soñadora y cantadora ávida, huixola usa estas técnicas como una manera de honrar sus ancestros y como una práctica en desarrollo para sanar traumas actuales, del pasado y de sus ancestros como una mujer queer, de color, y con raíces indígenas de Jalisco, MX.
*Durante su estancia en la residencia, huixloa llevará a cabo espacio para círculos de sueño como una manera de construir comunidad a través de la práctica, interpretación y dirección.  Todxs lxs soñadorxs, sin importar sus experiencias, estarán bienvenidxs.
